Message but they were temperamental and more expensive to manufacture. Over the years journal bearings have improved to the point that there's basically no difference. The turbos in the VR30DDTT are journal bearing, as are most small frame turbos. It seems like larger turbos still use ball bearings which really seem to have more to do with the mass of the rotating assembly and the dynamics of a car. Especially when turning the heavier rotating assemblies will have much larger gyroscopic forces.

These days it's not something I'd look for one way or another.
