Back in 1996 my 1992 5sp tranny synchro's 1st to 2nd went. Back then I had the tranny gear oil serviced at the Nissan dealer. Turns out the dealer was using a GL5 gear lube (manual states a GL4 required so dealer was wrong) which messed up the tranny synchro's. Dealer claimed no responsibility. I contacted Nissan SE zone and told them of the issue and they agreed that the only fluid was a GL4 for the manual tranny. Nissan SE zone conferred with Japan tech dept and they agreed under the powertrain warranty to replace the tranny and also while in there to replace the drive shaft (not sure why). I requested that the tranny come from Japan filled with the correct GL4 gear oil. That's what came and they installed it. There was no mention from Nissan to dump that fluid and fill with something else since back then there was no special gear oil other than usin a GL4. I ran that fluid for quite a while before changing and using GL4. Also spoke to a few oil company techs and asked about GL4 and GL5 gear oil ratings they said if the tranny requires GL4 you should only use it because GL5 is too corrosive for the green metals and the softer synchro's. The tech also said that containers that state multi apps like for use when GL3, GL4 and GL5 are specified they only backwardly compatible in differentials and not manual tranny's that specify a GL4. Happy landing with you new tranny.
