Message travel. With less travel available, spring rates must be increased to prevent bottoming out. You could run a softer rate, but a lowered car would run the risk of constantly hitting the shock absorber bump-stops over medium-sized potholes or speed bumps.

The brace simply stiffens and IMO actually helps you tune suspension as it eliminates some 'bouncy-ness' people often complain about.
