5th and reverse share the same hub assembly. If no grinding, or chunking like you said, then probably a bent fork is not able to move the hub assembly and engage the gear. Happened to me too on my old "Datsun" 210. I never fixed it. Forgot about fifth gear and always parked on a slope so I could coast free or the dang car was so light I would "Fred Flintstone" it and could push it backwards while seated in the car with one foot hanging out the door sill. Jajaja, thanks for bringing back the memories of my student life. I eventually sold the car without a functioning reverse or fifth gear and the new owner did not blink an eye, go figure.
