Message air in through the vents if left in fresh air mode. I don't know what the system does when turned off, regardless of which mode it was in, fresh air or recirculation. Also of note, when you put the system in diagnosis mode, you can force all air through the floor vents. Which means to me, they designed the 30% to the windshield vents on purpose. Problem with the defrost idea is it would have the opposite effect when cooler air was flowing through the windshield vents on a warm, humid day. Cool air on a hot windshield with high humidity, you get the picture. Although, the amount of air flow may not be high enough to have that effect.

The air distribution idea makes the most sense to me, I just don't know why they chose the windshield vents.
