with a dropcloth spread underneath. I used mostly kerosene, applied w/ a painters brush, and rags. Soak the crud for fifteen minutes, then scrap the big chucks off with a plastic scraper. Second pass is a degreaser/cleaner and rags; and maybe a bristle brush for stubborn spots. Last pass is an acetone wipe, then dry, then oil based paint. I used an Ace Hardware product but it was basically a Rustoleum clone. Most of the second pass was done while everything dismantled: Engine and driveline were removed, all the brake lines were gone, no subframe, etc. Lots easier to do it this way. No open flames or sparks, and lots of ventilation.
