once the hatch is raised about 12" from the closed position, the struts raise the hatch the rest of the way unassisted. The fully opened position is reached gently. With the hatch fully open, the struts resist closing until the hatch is lowered to within 8" of the taillights. Past that point the hatch closes itself with a bit more force than necessary to latch itself. I never had a set of new of struts in my Z32, or decent functioning OEM ones, so I don't know how these compare. But IMHO they are at least satisfactory in regulating hatch operation. .
