Message	the intake cams, and the gear on the front of the intake cam is unique to 96 (USDM). Of course, those things are not that difficult to change. The cams themselves are also unique to 96 USDM (you would need to pull the cam covers and measure the lift). There are other differences between early and late motors, including the cams and cam gears, as well as the head castings, which also correlates with the fuel rails and injectors used.
