Glass beads tend to be less aggressive. Good for cleaning dirt, light oxidation, light paint off of parts. Won't harm softer metals. I found it less effective for thick paint/powdercoat/heavy rust/etc. Aluminum Oxide is one of the more aggressive medias. It will tackle heavy rust, heavy paint, and powdercoat fairly well. It can also really etch aluminum, so you may need to be careful or turn down pressure. I found ground garnet readily available at hardware stores in my area. It was reasonably priced, a bit more aggressive than glass beads, but didn't last as long as aluminum oxide. I've heard coal slag is similar. This Eastwood Link has a decent reference table for the media that they sell. You can find similar charts from other companies that sell media.
