Message It's a fundamental misunderstanding of why you should use PayPal in the first place. PayPal's major feature is the buyer protection policy.

The Buyer can file a complaint and receive a refund through PayPal if they do not receive an item, or if the item received is not as described. The cost of that service is 3% of the sale price which the Seller pays.

Oftentimes the Seller does not want to absorb the cost of the 3% premium for the buyer protection, so they suggest paying via "friends and family" which avoids PayPal fees. That is in the Seller's best interest, because they get 3% more money. But they also (indirectly) eliminate recourse for the Buyer.

If the Seller asks for Buyer to send money via "friend and family," Buyer should insist on sending via "goods and service" (and potentially offer an extra 3% on the sale price) to receive the benefit of the buyer protection program.

Otherwise, "friends and family" is essentially like just sending cash. There's no point to using PayPal in the first place.
