It's unlikely that he smelled sausage or bacon because neither one is served for breakfast in France. Around the track, there are numerous food stands selling cured meats (saucisses de Strasbourg or merguez) which we'd call hot dogs or North African sausage. I drove about half-way across France in a Renault to attend the 1963 race where Ferrari swept the first three places to set up Henry Ford's desire for revenge. Slept on the ground and my pictures show that the crowds have been moved away from the track, making it safer.
