I used a 1990 Maxima alternator from Orielly Auto Parts. The mounting tabs on the alternator have to be drilled out as you stated. But the harness connector is relocated to the other side of the alternator body which places it right at the bottom edge of the block when you move the alternator closest to the engine for belt installation. This prevents you from moving the alternator close enough towards the crank pulley to use an OEM-sized belt. I had to step up to a slightly longer belt and as a result, the tensioner was unable to take up the slack for a properly tight belt. I ended up re-drilling a new mounting hole in the tensioner bracket where it meets the engine/oil pump. I drilled this new hole just to the driver's side of the original hole in the bracket (about 2mm between the closest side of the two holes) so that it would offset the tensioner further to the passenger side and provide enough adjustment to get good tension on the oversized belt.
