If you just want the car to be "louder and more obnoxious" you probably wont accomplish that by going to a larger pipe size. The reason for going larger is primarily due to a high power setup that needs to breathe as much as possible.2.5 inch and 3 inch mufflers are different-- you can't just cut a larger hole in the can and expect it to work correctly (although it would probably be louder, lol). You could use a reducer just before the muffler to cone the piping size down.
