While its true that some departments are using lasers, typically that's only in denser metro areas, and they're still not super common. Also, laser only works in certain conditions, so they do still rely on radar. Their radar technology hasn't changed AFAIK. Effectively everyone is using Ka band, and the detectors are great at picking them up. I don't store mine in my car, even in the glovebox anymore. I accidentally left it attached to my windshield in a parking garage overnight to have thieves literally rip the sunroof out of my daily so they could try to unwire the permanent wire kit (which is basically just telephone wire). That was a $2000+ claim, and only covered the car damage, not the detector and other goods stolen (which were below the deductible of my home insurance). If you are going to run one, I recommend a permanent wire kit and also a permanent mounting kit off the rear view. Although legal in most states, some states do technically have (largely unenforced) laws against any windshield attachments.
