Message Um it would be a bit difficult to do on a dyno as you need to access the crank snout.

But yes you do need adjustable cam gears. Helpful if you are trying to extract that last bit of performance or have planed the head.

Here is a link specifically for VG 30

And a generic link

My tuners swear by the fact you need to degree your cams, however if you have the VG variable cam timing retained it is not as crucial.

But I have found on my last two engines that we ended up maximising the adjustments on the cam gears to get as close as possible using BDE adjustable cam gears- plug for Brett who gave me a discount on my third set:)

So there is definately gains, but it is a few hours work. So you have to be wanting to chase max HP gains.

Best gains are had just keeping the VTC, better gains are had with the VTC and adjusable cams gears, but expect a bit of cost.

Just FWIW, I found most of the aftermarket cams could be used with VTC, but you had to make sure you remove the plugs they put in the cams. And I think there was a plug in each end of the cam, but dont quote me on that. We had to make a special tool to get the plug out of the Tomei solid lifter cams to convert to VCT
