Message alternator output shaft, but its only significant when there is an electrical load placed on it. Such as when the steering wheel is being turned (if you have EPS), or you turn on your headlights or your massive stereo is cranking. The advantage is that with an EPS, the alternator will only see a significant load when you are turning the steering wheel as opposed to a hydraulic system where you have a constant max load on the output shaft of the PS pump as the other posts mentioned as well.
