Regarding HU sound quality, the major source of variation is... the source. Once there was CDs, that's it. No MP3s, no streaming audio, just tape or CD or AM/FM as a source. Really judged on the processing only, as anyone who cared about audio quality was doing external amplification anyway. Although built-in amps vary a fair amount, it's still a small contributor to the differences in audio quality. It was quite easy to judge the differences when you have an apples to apples comparison available. Streaming audio quality can usually be selected, higher quality = more data etc. But then again, in the automotive environment, the SQ of the HU is a minimal consideration with diminishing ROI relative to the other measures (sound deadening, inter connect quality, speaker quality).
