Message a turbulent boundary layer that forces a laminar sublayer to be thinner. Like blowing a liquid off sandpaper compared to a glass surface. With the golf ball dimples they also promote turbulence to occur but the drag reduction on the ball is from a reduced wake size behind the ball.
