If you take that into consideration, and that they are working for a corporation not a shop so which means there are going to be many iterations and reviews... If it took the better part of a year with multiple engineers, machining costs etc. I don't think $800,000 is out of the question. Don't get me wrong, a few guys with some experience and ability can handily make this a reality for a fraction of the cost and time - but that's not how they are going to approach it if they are serious about mass production.
