Message Up north the 5w-30 would be a good choice syn.

On older engines syn oils have been known to clean too well and cause seals to leak more, especially if the seals are so hard that flexibility cannot be returned to them. This happened to me.

If using a mineral oil the wider the spread between the numbers the less oil in the can and the more viscosity improvers (VI) in the can to create the behavior of a 30w at 212F from a 5w base oil. I would not use a 5w-30 mineral oil but a 5w-30 syn oil is a different breed of cat and it is formulated different so the weight spread is not as big an issue.

If you are unsure of the internals of the engine I would consider a high mileage syn blend oil, mobil, castrol, vavoline, pennzoil, etc make them. They have seal conditioners in them and other additives. Stick to the 10w-30 on these.
