If you use a proper fan controller, the e-fans will only run when they are needed. I'm using a pair of bolt-on Maxima e-fans (with shroud), OEM thermostat, OEM plastic end-tank radiator, regular antifreeze and water, a good Flex-a-Lite controller, and good wiring. A standard 170 degree thermostat is perfect for most street Z's. If your engine doesn't reach 170, the ECU will typically believe the car isn't warm enough. The main cooling problem is usually a lack of airflow at low rpm with the stock mechanical fan. The hottest my engine has gotten since installing the electric fans is 190 degrees F while sitting in traffic for an hour in 105 degree weather. I have no problems driving in Texas even when the temperature reaches close to 110. The fan controller intelligently cycles the fans and runs them for a minute after shut-down. I used to see 220 degrees with a mechanical fan when stuck in the same situation.
