no matter how "clean" they look. Brand new lifters making noise, probably needs more oil circulation to get them settled. Overheating, did you properly clean all the coolant galleys and made sure no foreign debris will block the flow? I've been there. Had to pull the freshly rebuilt engine back out and re-do half of the work to get to the thermostat housing since I did not reseal the joint between the thermostat housing and the heater core hose hard pipe, this is the joint that sits right above the knock sensor. Furthermore, I had reseal all my core plugs because I pressed them in dry with no sealant and those leaked. Don't quit now. You've come too far to throw in the towel. BTW, if you used any silicon hoses for oil/coolant, throw them away and install rubber hoses.
