After the engine was installed in the Z and the harness hooked up, the ECU showed a code 34. The sensor wire showed an open on a resistance test from the ECU harness side of the knock sensor sub-harness to ground. I repeated this test on the bench, out of the vehicle. As soon as the connector is wiggled in the slightest amount, the knock sensor breaks contact and there is no resistance shown on the meter reading at the ECU side of the knock sensor sub-harness. Perhaps if one were to solder the wire directly to the knock sensor, or glue the sub-harness connector to the knock sensor, it should work just fine. But you are right; if only it was an easy sensor to swap out I could have datalogged some readings using KnockSpy before and after replacing the sensor.
