I'll add if you can get the car up on ramps in the front and look underneath for oil leaks out the front by the crank pulley and power steering leaks, they're pretty common on older cars, even low mileage ones. Rear main seal may be leaking as well, lots of oily gunk on the transmission casing will be the clue to this. Also, the fuel system will typically have the old black dampner and fuel pressure regulator as well as brittle upper fuel lines. I replaced all of this on my 1990 Silver turbo when I bought the car this spring... was under a couple of hundred bucks for parts. If you can find anyone in your area with a Consult cable and Datascan or ConZult on a laptop, you can do a quick ECU check for codes as well as power balance test.
