Of course detonation can cause many types of mechanical failures .... And, of course, whenever you try to materially increase the horsepower of any engine, you are conversely losing safety margin by definition. So of course there are risks. How do you manage that risk? Well you could overbuild your engine and de-tune it for maximum safety. That is what nissan essentially did. Or you could try to build your engine to WITHSTAND detonation - good luck with that. Or you could TUNE your engine to its maximum potential and to AVOID detonation and you could monitor for warning signs and controllables like exhaust temperatures and AFRs. You could also deploy active intervention like JS Knocksense (which didnt exist in the 90s but you certainly certainly use now). Those are just a few examples - aircraft go even further given the obvious downside (pun intended). So as I said: Build it. Tune it properly. Drive it. And as I said: you are naive to think that "minutes" in Nistune will be all it takes.
