Message Z32 upgrades a standalone offers you more adjustability, accurate inputs and outputs, tunable knock and boost control and more resolution. I think once you start making big changes to the ve of the engine you need to go standalone.

Adaptronics seems interesting although I have not used one. To me the haltech solution is so easy and modular it makes it is me to get going and it's sorted out by the manufacturer so you can concentrate on tuning rather than wiring and electronics. I am not a fan of the DIY stand alone solutions you build yourself because the software is cryptic and it requires too much setup time which most customers are unwilling to pay for or recognize the value of.
