If he really believes a 5-speed swap is remotely similar in cost, skill, time and overall investment, let him continue to indulge in his delusions. I can go to a local scrap yard and pull all the parts required for a 5-speed swap for a hundred bucks. It takes me 2-3 hours for a clutch job, installing the pedal takes 5 minutes, cutting a hole for the master takes me 10 mins, so overall it's an afternoon job for me (I do them fairly regularly in our local group) and after a new clutch, turning the flywheel and fluid the total investment is still less than a 120k maintenance kit alone for the vg. Let alone all the extra tools involved, the cost of the motor, efi harness, turbos, hoses, gaskets, pcv valves, intercoolers, piping and couplers etc and the amount of time putting all of it together properly and dropping it into the car. He's delusional.
