Increase the diameter of the wheel as they go fatter. In drag racing you would want to stay with the same diameter or smaller if possible and when you go wider the front and back footprint stay the same but it will increase the contact patch because of the width you increase your grip. Of course you have to install the corresponding wheel width for the tire and leave the sidewalls the same height or lager if in a smaller wheel so when you lower the tire pressure the contact patch increases dramatically. why do you think the drag corvettes, camaros and mustangs are using 345 or the likes tire with smaller wheels at the track? Not because of looks!
