And the fact that you think the paint roller analogy is apt means you really don't have a clue. The tires contact patch is created by deforming the round tire by load placed on it by the car and resisted by the tires air pressure and sidewall rigidity. Fatter tire = shorter wider contact patch.
Less vertical pressure downward per square inch = lower friction
It's all a balancing act. The fact that 300zx's came with pathetically narrow tires from the factory given modern tire characterics is not a universal truth for other cars.
For instance if you look at a similar sort of extreme performance car of similar layout and weight to a Z, you find something like an aston martin vantage has FRONT TYRE: BRIDGESTONE POTENZA 235/40 ZR19 REAR TYRE: BRIDGESTONE POTENZA 275/35 ZR19 It IS pretty much a universal truth that moving a z from 225/245 to 245/275 on modern tires improves all facets of performance. Would you just get a ferrari 458 and improve the performance by adding 2 inch wider wheels and tires? probably not unless they were R compounds (drastically different compound and friction characteristics)

Putting AMS garbage, and $500 ebay wheels on a Z is like dressing a Victorias Secret model in a Walmart dress and Payless shoes. You're embarrassing yourself. |
