My argument is that, given all things equal, the area of the contact patch remains almost the same with an increase in tire width. The paint roller analogy is not valid because it doesn't bring into the equation the force (weight of the vehicle) acting upon it. I'm not saying wider tires are worse. I'm saying there is a point of diminishing returns and that there is a trade off between cornering ability (with wider tires) and straight line traction as the area of the contact patch changes shape.
