I am aware you are Andy from comparing your screen name in your profile on tt.net with the one on YouTube Given all things are equal (tire pressure, weight) and camber is 0 in both examples, a wider tire of the same total diameter will be larger than a thinner tire. Speaking of what was said in YouTube, one guy gave a great example of a paint roller. Cut the paint roller in half and you will have half the paint area from the roller. Referring to your point that it is worse for straight line, that's not entirely true at all. It could hurt your higher speed due to rolling resistance and wind resistance at speed, but the tradeoff is you'll have a large increase in traction on launch and during bursts of acceleration like on gear changes, etc. So the tradeoff of additional traction from the wider contact patch usually wins out the rolling and wind resistance of the tire (Unless you just don't have enough power to support the wider tire.)
