Message I've been using it for quite a few years. It's a stand alone ECU that replaces the factory ECU. You can calibrate the inputs to use factory or aftermarket sensors (CAS, TPS, coolant temp, MAP, air temp, wideband O2...) and configure the analog or digital outputs to control idle valves, wastegates, fan, VTC, water/meth injection, NOS... You build your own timing maps, fuel maps and compensation maps...in much more granularity than the stock 8 bit ECU. You can log the data and tune the maps in close loop in real time.

The reprogrammed chips are basically the stock ECU with modified maps, they are limited by the factory setup. To expand the capabilities, people usually piggy back other devices onto the ECU: boost controller, traction control (although Haltech does not have this feature), AFC, 2 step rev limiter...

Not familiar with Nistune. I think it piggy-backs onto the factory ECUs.
