Message Thrust bearing turbos require a cool-down before shutting off to prevent oil coking after a hard drive. Since your wear metals were not abnormally high, I don't think the oil was to blame; but rather, a hard carbon formation presenting a restriction inside the turbo oil galleys which prevented proper lubrication to the thrust bearing.

Another thought - did the car have antifreeze mix in the cooling system or just straight water (prevalent in southern cars, ie: Texas)? Antifreeze prevents corrosion buildup much better than tap water due to the minerals contained in tap water. When the turbos are super-heated under boost, corrosion buildup in the coolant galleys (or a less than optimal cooling system mix) will eventually lead to the same scenario as above. Though your coolant temp gauge may not be affected by this. Distilled water is much better to use than tap water, but still not as good as an antifreeze mix.
