Message I'm going to have to apologize, as I was not aware (nor did I bother searching) that anyone has made a write up already on how to rebuild a tranny. So I guess I'm off the hook :D

as far as the pilot bearing......

either I have the smallest midget hands on a grown 6'2" man OR this is the biggest pilot bearing I've ever seen in my life!! :O

I won't deny that the insert springs are responsible for premature "grinding" as I have no way to prove it.
To my understanding the only purpose of the insert springs is to hold the shift fork into the selected gear. The synchro itself is engaged with the selector collar before the collar contacts the actual gear so if the synchro isn't slowing the gear down- then by the time the collar contacts the gear it grinds. IIRC Nissan's fix to the "soft synchros" was..... harder synchros that wear less than these, keeping the traction required to slow the gear down for more mileage. This is just my opinion, I'm just pondering aloud at this point.

*disclaimer*: all that I say may be true or I may be completely wrong and I accept that.... please, it is your duty as another person on the internet to impolitely tell me how wrong I am :)
