Message I bought a shop press from harbor freight to change some wheel bearings for a friend, then....
I got the crazy idea to rebuild one of my transmissions.
So I bought a rebuild kit from transparts warehouse (I found the cheapest price on ebay) here's what comes in the kit (pics of the used parts)

I bought a few more tools from harbor freight
gear puller
snap ring pliers
large snap ring pliers
pin punch set
I also used some other normal tools, some pieces of 2x4 a cut piece of 2" diameter pipe (about a foot long) and some jack stands.
Then I took it all apart. It was very difficult and time consuming as these tools are not perfect nor were they the best to do it with but they were the cheapest. The hardest part for me was removing the speed sensor bushing/gear. I had to rig the gear puller up in a way that it wouldn't slip off or bind. Putting it back together was not too hard, although the service manual is very helpful it isn't idiot proof.

I am refraining from making a write up as I will admit I didn't do it completely by the book so no blind leading the blind. The main reason I rebuilt it was to gain experience and see if I have the ability to do it. I didn't measure tolerances/runout but I don't THINK it will be an issue as the transmission I rebuilt did not fail catastrophically and the kit I purchased only came with 1 size shim and no other sized clips so it wasn't possible for me to adjust any of the clearances anyway.

Some thoughts on the rebuild:
I initially thought the synchros were worn out on the teeth but after examining them carefully I changed my hypothesis, the surfaces on which the synchros ride on are conical and the inner diameter of the synchros are machined with a rough pattern

so when the synchro is loaded it grabs onto the conical surface to slow down and match the speed of the main shaft and the gear. When this rough machining is worn out then the synchro doesn't do it's job because it has no traction to act upon "synchronizing" the gear and shaft. The rebuild kit fits all the vehicles that come with this same transmission I couldn't find any parts that these match so there were 2 bonus parts left over,

you don't really have to change every synchro and bearing but why not? This rebuild is not for the faint of heart it is very involved, I would almost recommend buying a good used transmission or a brand new JDM 99 instead. If you enjoy taking things apart and finding out how they tick and you have extra time, space, money, patience to do all of this I have to say I didn't regret it. It was alot of fun!! :)

The newly rebuilt transmission is installed and sounds like a normal transmission, it also shifts very smoothly and NO GRINDING in any gear. I will update accordingly as I put mileage on it and will notify in a future post when/if it fails.

When and if I rebuild another tranny in the future I will do my best to put up a good write up.

*disclaimer*: all that I say may be true or I may be completely wrong and I accept that.... please, it is your duty as another person on the internet to impolitely tell me how wrong I am :)

You're correct, there are 3 good reasons -vorpalZ
