Message I have the following
Alpine iDA-X305S
Boston Pro Series 60SE (Fronts) 125 RMS
Boston SR65 (Rears) 75 RMS
Pioneer TS-SW2501S4 10"
Alpine PDX-5
2 Farad Cap.

The fronts were so loud... even with the top down, that they were nearly piercing on the highs. The rears I barely hear anyways and use them as fill but you're right, the sub sucks.
My apples to apples comparison is this... I used the PDX-5 in my old TT with a Boston (4ohm 300rms) 12" and it sounded beautiful. Nice punch, nice lows, not something that can be heard down the street. The same amp in my vert is very lacking. This is very likely due to the ultra shallow box EVEN though the cu ft. is to spec.
