will be able to tell if its bad or not pretty easily. Take the fan clutch in your hands and spin both sides. If it spins easily, it's probably good. If it spins but very difficultly or not at all, or you hear even the faintest gritty grinding inside of it, it's bad. It should only lock up if it's been subjected to engine heat.
Supposedly they are specific to NA or TT and will activate or deactivate according to set temperature ranges for each model.
