Like you, I like to make stuff myself if I can, but if one counts hours at any reasonable rate, it's far cheaper to buy it from people who have made a few. They have done the figuring, the setups, the failures to learn from, etc. Usually, when doing a one-of-a-kind, you have to settle for "good-enough", but then you do have pride of making it yourself.
