Message out, the total mass of the system would increase or decrease. Saying "air is compressible" tells us nothing about the mass flow rates. At any given rpm and load the mass of fluid in the engine remains essentially unchanged if averaged out over crank rotations, therefore the inlet and outlet mass flow rates are the same.

The densities of the inlet and outlet may be different, but alone this information tells you nothing of the mass flow rates.

HighPsi's statement was essentially correct, but his conclusion was wrong--as we have seen from empirical evidence.
