Message The act of compressing them work hardens them after a few compression cycles, they will be "dead brittle" and crack/start leaking. Copper crush washers do the same thing, which is why it is not a good idea to reuse them. I have seen some procedures to anneal copper washers if you are up a creek, and I know it could be done on aluminum, you'd just have to find the tight temperatures to get it to.
