Message 1) wear metals & contaminants, such as
- Silicon, fairly common (basically dirt, usually gets in through a intake leak or dirty filters)
- fuel (below 1 -2 % is acceptable, above that you should be checking leakdown),
- glycol (not good)
- copper, moly (coming off bearings) iron (coming off the block) indicative of bearing wear, possible lack of lubrication symptoms

2) Viscosity index and breakdown based on a reference sample of the oil

Without knowing where you start with and oil, you can't accurately assess how well it's holding up. Comparing oil X to oil Y is also useless unless you know how far it is shearing and falling out of grade in reference to where it is new.

The lab I use (Fluidlife) checks your used samples against reference samples of the same product new. This was how I determined that the Mobil 1 10W30 was falling out of grade over several samples and the Mobil 1 0W40 was staying closer to the reference specs. Again, one sample won't tell you this, you need a pattern of samples to see how well it's performing.

As Z enthusiasts, we change oil far more frequently than the average motorist... it's pretty easy to take a sample and have an analysis done at each change. You'll build up a series of sample results to see how well the oil performs over time.

Also, changing oil and grades won't give you accurate results for the new product on your first sample unless you have completely drained the old oil from the engine i.e.: a brand new build. Typically it takes a couple of changeouts for the old product to be diluted/ removed from the engine. Your sample results will be a mix of the old/new product for a bit.

I have a bunch of results for Mobil 1 10W30 and 0W40 for my TT, and Mixman is referencing Royal Purple 0W40 with his UOA's over this summer.
