Message Yesterday my buddy and I went to pick up his new (slighly used) Porsche. The previouos owner had intalled an Escort 9000ci RADAR detector/LIDAR jammer. I have been reading about it an have learned a few things about this topic.

There is no "detection" of LIDAR. The beam is narrow and if you detect it, you have alreday been detected. RADAR beams are more diffuse and the spill rays (outside of the central beam) could be detected. Not sure if these X, K and Ka band devices are still in use.

Cops use the headlights and the license plate (some states require a front plate) as reflective surfaces for the LASER beam. The larger the face of the vehicle the easier the detection, or I should say the larger the distance at which the refelction (and subsequent detection) can occur. A flat black hood and VEIL painted headlights, markers and plate will diminish their reflectivity. Most write-ups say an SUV can be detected at 3000 feet while a small car with the above treatments would have to be at 500 feet, or thereabouts to be detected. At 500 feet you may be able to see the aimer.

This model Escort also has a GPS feature and a refreshable traffic light camera database. It alerts you when you are near an intersection with a camera.

I wonder if any Z owners out there have tried this detector/jammer or the VEIL product? The Z32, with its low roof line, raked headlights and smallish "face" should be one of the harder ones to detect, especially if modified as mentioned above. BTW, not to worry about the windshield. Light penetrates it and is absorbed by the interior.
