Message Hi,

I have reached a stage where I need to fabricate the pipework for the dual MAF/Selin kit and firm-up the final location of the huge RAMAIR filters.
I am going to mount each filter above each side scoop, which will sit in air flow that enters the centre nose section and travels up to the engine bay under the the hood, and each will also be served by a small custom scoop in either side of the front fascia specifically for same.

Filters will live here...
MAF 3

I have not converted turbo/inlet to 3" piping yet - but will do at a later stage; but while I am fabricating inlet, I intend to use 3" (76mm). So I have started mocking up the 76mm piping where they will join the 63mm stock air inlet pipes in the centre nose section:

Looking like this currently..

MAF 3

MAF 3

So the new piping will join to the existing pipes, 90 degree forward and then 90 degree back under the old headlamp position each side - then 45 degree forward to sit/secure on top of the outside/top of the new main scoops.

I really wanted these to be one piece per side with no joins - so the MAF unit on each side became a bit of an issue for me...

...I searched and found that a few people had had a similar issues and had fixed it by dismantling the MAF and remounting the parts in a custom flange welded to the pipe work and/or using a MAF mount - which would create 2 more joins!!.

Like this excellent effort:

And a typical MAF mount section: (v expensive!!)

These seem good solutions... I decided to simplify - So I just cut the ends off my MAF(s) and then sliced them down so that all the original delicate parts/housing remains untouched, but easily mounted on the new piping as below...

Cut here..

These are the two ends cut off and the sensor section removed:

And we end up with this...

To mount this anywhere in my new inlet piping I simply have to drill a 20mm hole and glue the unit on with a suitable sealer as shown on this piece of scrap tubing:

To me this makes a lot of sense - but I don't think I have seen anyone else chop up there MAF and mount it in this way before!!

I also removed the little mesh screens that protect the MAF element from 'objects' in the airstream - I hope to fab these into the pipework in-front and behind the MAF unit when in the new pipework somewhere.

More 76mm pipe is awaited so I cant finish this yet - but will post some more pics when I can get the welding done and it's mounted on the front.

To remove/clean the elements I envisage chopping them out of the silicon with a cheese wire and then just re-sealing them back in afterwards!

Question: Is increasing the run length of the inlet piping going to have any effect on how she runs/idles/whatever?

Because of the Selin cable lengths - the MAFS will still be mounted pretty much close to where they would mount in a stock conversion.

Comments appreciated as ever.
