a ported 8" woofer(s) facing backwards perpendicular to the floor placed snug up against the cargo shelf. More than one woofer is better to increase linearity from both seating positions. I was auditioning the JL 8W3v3 in a .6ft^3 ported enclosure. That driver spanked my 12" diamond sub sealed in a 1.25ft^3 enclosure facing straight up in the back corner of the trunk area. for some reason the 8" could maintain a very high output without sounding like it was working very hard to get there. My next setup will probably have 4-5, 8" drivers mounted up off the floor a little so I can slip the t-tops under the enclosures. I have been looking for the ideal setup for the past 10 years. Some of the worse setups I tried is any woofer configuration that faces forward. I hear to much mechanical noise coming from the drivers with really bad performance equal and below 35hz. Drivers facing straight up work pretty well, however they are hard to tune properly. I can never get that transparent, powerful, tight bass response. To get that punch I had to increase the crossover point frequency to the 60-80hz area which created too much of a point source unless you turned the gains down considerably.
please omit the camera mount in the pic :)
As you can see below the enclosure is split (lower and upper section). This give the illusion of a smaller enclosure.
The woofer in the pic below is my opinion on the best location for sub placement, however it is the most challenging to install.
I used a setup with 3 sealed 10"s mounted on a 30 degree angle from horizontal almost parallel to the rear glass. That configuration worked very well, however it takes up a lot of trunk space. Couldn't fit the T-tops back there which is a big compromise.
