I have worked on a few with spun bearings or other catastrophic failures with out any visable damage to the turbos. It, I suppose would depend on, to what degree the failure was. Your oil pickup/strainer will catch most pieces of debris not all of course. It would I suppose, also depend on how long a person would try if possible to run the engine knowingly or unknowingly after said damage occured. But why do people build the z engines with forged internals.......... extra insurance. Ash was speaking mainly about left over metal bits from the machining of a built engine getting through to the turbos and the filters being an extra precaution.
