Good spotting. We had some detailed discussions about this. Note it does have a tensioner though.This was a compromise we had to make to work with the damper, due to space restrictions. Bill advised at the time "Won't be the first time I have used one, or the last. I designed an aircraft engine that used a very small 3 rib J series belt. That system made 18 gpm of flow at 100 psi which is about twice the load your pump will see with a larger belt so that wont be a problem. As for slipping that is not a concern for pressure just like the power steering pump has no issues with it." Sure you will have to keep an eye on the belt condition but you have to do that anyway with a cog belt.
