This the answer to the question I'd been asking myself for quite some time. The question? How many miles can I get my engine to go before it finally gives up.

And while I knew the inevitable was coming, I still didn't have my spare engine built up and ready to go in (blame it on other, well-deserving, priorities for my time/attention/finances). Anyway, after so many years of sitting on the sidelines and watching/helping people do their builds, it's finally time for me to get cracking on my build.

And for those who don't believe in divine intervention, the car died just as I was pulling up to our shop. The car had just developed what was either a lifter tick or VTC rattle, so I was going there to investigate things further. I'm very thankful it didn't happen miles from home in the middle of freeway rush hour traffic. I believe the problem was with the driver's side VTC sprocket going past it's rotational limit and ultimately spinning relative to the cam. If I'm right, then this is what allowed the rest of the engine to keep turning while the driver's side intake cam did not. You know how that turns out....I may cut open the VTC sprocket to confirm that this was the cause.

My first order of business is to order pistons, bearings, and rings so I can send the spare block out to the machinist. Why is it always more fun when this is someone else's project, and such a pain when it's your own?
