I bought a 1993 N/A for a daily driver 6 months ago. The A/C didn't work, so I took it to a repair shop for testing. They put on new R134a fittings, pulled a vacuum and did a leak test. Found leaks in the condenser and a short in the compressor. Wanted over $1,000 to replace parts and retrofit with R134a. Since the system is not that complex, I did a bit of reading on-line, then found a used condensor ($35) and compressor ($30) from a local salvage yard. Took a couple of hours to replace the parts, just cleaning them externally, draining but not flushing the compressor and using new O-rings. Then I charged the system with one 12 oz can of R143a, used the gauge to check the pressure, and used the car without using the A/c for a week. Pressure was the same after a week, so I figured the system was good. Charged the system fully with another 12 oz can and a can of silicone lubricant. A/C has been working fine for the past two months. Auto climate control runs faster when you first start up if the interior is warm, but quickly goes to low fan. I'm pretty happy with the results, especially with the cost saving.
