The reasons overlays don't look good is because they just sit on top of your parts and look tacked on. A better option would be to take the parts you'd like to 'look better' and prep them for a new surface finish. Sand them down, fill in cuts and scrapes with Bondo, sand again, then primer, sand with finer paper, sand with even finer paper (1000 grit), and then have them finished with a paint or hydrographics. If you're dead set on the carbon-look then I'd say hydrogrpahics are the way to go. However, you can get wood grains and metallic finishes also. The engine bay parts I had done came out really nice and I've thought about having some of the plastic trim pieces done too. Here are my pics (3ZC link since the TT.net link used PD for the pics):
