| I laughed quite hard at the "differentiate white noise" comment and everyone around me thought I was crazy.. I know how hard it is to pick out small sounds on recordings if it isnt done with a quality microphone. All my flyby/BOV recording attempts just end up sounding like I threw the camera out the window while driving on the highway..but I digress.. Try a different oil/ oil stabilizer to see if its the lifters. Was the engine recently rebuilt? I had noticed lifter tick on both my rebuilds and it seemed to go away after switching to a different oil . How old are the VTC gears? Are they stock? This seems to be a more common problem now and I've heard can sound similar to rod knock at times?? Does it sound like a light tapping/clicking or a heavy rattle? I've been fooled by my hood prop before thinking I had bad valves/ lifters. Check around incase somethings just loose before you start stipping down the engine.. trust me I was glad I did As for the pvc rattle/tensioner.. I haven't heard much about that being commonly related to ticking/knocking sounds. Don't rule it out though, you would be surprised And lastly, im sure you have already checked for rod knock/ bearing failure on each cylinder by pulling of the connectors and listing carefully to see if the sound goes away.. it can start light sounding like lifter tick and next thing you know it sounds like a hammer beating on the hood. I found that out the hard way.. Hope this helps, good luck
